phenomenally good this is, which is why Fastly attracts and retains the best talent. These are complex distributed systems with cascading failures. It’s not just flipping a switch to fix.

I know a lot of people at Fastly and they are among best in the world, and while I have no information you don’t, a few things should be clarified.

A stunningly bad take by @nytimes this morning about the @Fastly outage and a thread about what NYT got wrong. My team used to operate the global CDN for @CWC_tweets . 1/9

Back in 2001 companies had developed the ability to distribute a proportion of traffic across our CDN and others by essentially turning a dial. Failures are inevitable, plan accordingly.

2. ‘All of these websites really depended on this one third-party service, and the slight disruption in that caused this disproportionate effect’.
That is a problem with the website, not the service.

3. “said that companies that provide the infrastructure for websites can be slow to provide details when they experience internal failures”.
They posted updates every 5 or 10 minutes until it was resolved. Does that look slow to you? This is professional incident response.

This is the kind of work I’ve been doing for 20+ years, and this is what I help companies with every day.

not only will they work to ensure the same problem doesn’t happen again, but they will ALSO learn from the incident how to recover even faster the next time they have a (inevitable) different outage.

4. “their main selling point to clients is their reliability”.

Recovering from a global CDN failure in less than an hour IS reliability. Because Fastly would be considered an “elite performer” by the DORA/Accelerate metrics,
